Cant deny, cant lie, cant really face the truth.

For info

Hello again ADB

I will be leaving on the 17:05 flight to Manila today.

Totally having one of those mixed feeling days – I realised that I do miss all my friends over there (AND the clients, who are mostly angels) and i cant wait to see them again! But yet, I also love all my friends here and I’d be bummed not to be in town when they call for lunchies and dinners.

Good thing its only gonna be a short 5 day stint this time around. :)

I’ll be back on Saturday, and will keep updating as and when I have time.

Love! :)

Dr B. Peskin’s breakthrough

In a final and somewhat desperate attempt to try to adopt and stick to a healthy eating regime, I went out looking for scientifically proven/ nutritionist-recommended dietary advice which can be easily followed and maintained from day 1.

My efforts were futile.

Until the sister lent me a book she exclusively acquired, called “The Hidden Story of Cancer” by Dr. Brian Peskin.

I know right – it sounds totally unrelated. What has cancer got to with maintaining a healthy diet plan? Oh but you’re wrong. It was a thick book to read, but when i finally managed to scour through most of the book, it was like an enlightenment. Some of the things he proposed were just totally unheard of, like making sure I take in enough fats every day. And some of his theories were simply the opposite of mainstream recommendations and publications on food and health.

I mean, if it can help control my blood sugar level, curb hunger pangs, AND prevent cancer at the same time… Seriously, WHY shouldn’t I give it a go? :)

I have been trying to follow through his recommendation since 2 weeks ago, with my first week strictly adhering to his advice. And it was crazy difficult. Especially for a closet carbo-freak like me. I love my biscuits, rice and beehoon! (albeit in small portions each time)… I cant live without my dark chocolates and ben & jerrys!

But i was determined. So i spent quite a heap of money stocking up on different type of seeds & nuts – Almonds, Pine nuts, Walnuts, Sesame seeds, Flax seeds, Pumpkin seeds, Sunflower seeds… and essential parent omega 6 and omega 3 oils – a bottle of cold-pressed organic evening primrose oil and some flaxseed oil for drizzling on salads. Basically going on a protein and essential fats diet.

On the 2nd day, my meals consisted mainly of nuts, oils, smoked salmon and roasted chicken. It was great, cos i was actually on leave, so i could prepare my own meals. I stayed clear of sugared liquids and drank warm manuka honey with water in the morning to help with the detoxification.

Had abit of withdrawal symptoms initially, i totally felt like having breakfast with some cereal, but managed to resist the temptation.

On the 3rd day, I had a couple of wheat biscuits with peanut butter, and drizzled it with some flax seeds and pumpkin seeds. Downed it with some manuka honey water… and i felt full. So i stopped.

Lunch was a good serving of spinach and smoked salmon, drizzled with some olive oil. Magically, i did not have any hunger pangs throughout the day… I didn’t have ANY cravings for chocolate, carbo, or ice cream although i was at home the whole day with full access of the kitchen and fridge. Quite amazing.

Subsequently, I just made sure I added some nuts and oils to everything I ate.

Like my mom’s dumplings, for example. Heehee.

By the end of the first week I felt my body responding positively to the diet plan with no hunger pangs in general, and less cravings at night (wow). I was more energetic and alert (which i spent focused on cleaning up my room).

UNFORTUNATELY, on the 2nd week when i went back to work (the week that had just passed)… I resumed almost normal eating habits cos it was difficult to dabao food as per Dr Peskin’s recommendation in the CBD area. :( Nonetheless, i tried hard to follow whenever i can, like ordered more meats and took in much less carbo whenever possible. Im quite resolute to make this work.

So there! This is gonna be an on-going process. So wish me luck!

Myrica rubra

Today I will be introducing a new fruit which i have been nom-ing for the past 2 days since my parents shipped it back from China.

It is called the Myrica Rubra, or more widely known as “杨梅” (chinese) …or the “yamamomo” (japanese, literally mountain peach)… or the so-called “Bayberry” in english. Its not a very common fruit but i’m sure some of you might have tasted it before.

It is native to eastern Asia, mainly in China, where it has been grown for at least 2000 years. Chinese cultivation is concentrated south of the Yangtze River, where it is of considerable economic importance.

Its niche is forests on mountain slopes and valleys at altitudes of 100-1500 m. It is native to Fujian, Guangdong, Guangxi, Guizhou, Hainan,  Hunan, Jiangsu,Jiangxi, Sichuan, Yunnan, and Zhejiang. Also naturalized in Taiwan, Japan, Korea, and the  Philippines. [wiki]

I guess its called a berry cos it doesnt have a skin per se, you just nom into the flesh directly. And that is also why the yamamomo is prone to invasion of worms who live on the trees of the yamamomo plant. My mom says before you eat them, be sure to SOAK the fruits in saltwater for some time – this will purge out any worms who are still enjoying the flesh of the fruit when you buy them home and prevent you from ingesting them!!! //cringes.

The flesh of the fruit looks like this.

Climate Change Economics in Bangladesh

What are the implications of climate change for Bangladesh?

Bangladesh’s geography makes it one of the most vulnerable countries to climate change. It is dominated by flood plains, with most of the land less than 12m above sea level. Bangladesh is also affected by 2 very different eco-systems (the himalayas to the north and the bay of bengal to the south). The overall result is that it has too much water during the monsoon season and too little in the winter. In an average year, approx 1 quarter of the country is inundated.

The climate change vulnerability of Bangladesh’s poor is well recognised, with 70 mil people likely to be affected by the floods annualy by 2050. While there is still considerable uncertainty about the timing and severity of climate change impacts, existing research suggests the following:

- Sea level rise leading to inundation of up to 7% of Bangladesh’s land area by 2050
- Increased frequency and intensity of cyclones
- Increased salinity in river floods,
- Heavier and more erratic rainfall during the monsoon season, and lower and more erratic rainfall in the drier north and west regions
- Higher inundation risks becos of the metling ice caps in the himalayas.

A 1m rise in sea level (expected at the end of the century) will inundate the whole of the Sundarbans. If the sea level rise is higher than currently expected and coastal polders are not strengthened or new ones built, 6-8 million pl could be displaced by 2050. Increased salinity is likely to result in the decline in rice and wheat production, and more pronounced shortage of drinking water.

Current embankments in Bangladesh are not designed to deal with 50- and 100- year storms. Embankment failure is therefore a serious possibility. Increased salinity will also lead to migration into cities from rural areas, making the management of employment and services for large members of migrants another challenge. The latter problem may be compounded in coastal cities, where ground water is likely to become more saline.

Junnebug is set to go on a Mission Trip to Bangladesh this Friday – a little anxious and a little concerned. Am i ready yet? Not sure. But I do pray so.

I have read up a little about the country, watched a couple of videos posted on the plight of  some of the villagey Bangladeshis – homes being wrecked by floods, people dying of the droughts. I do hope that God will lift them up somehow, save them people. At the same time, am looking forward to preparing my heart for this trip and making it work for me and my little mission team. Lord, please guide us and teach us how we can serve you and fulfill Your Will in this mission trip!

The link between animals and natural disasters?

Did animals predict China’s earthquake?
Zoo creatures behaved strangely just hours before the disaster

By Henry Sanderson (AP)

BEIJING -
First, the water level in a pond inexplicably plunged.
Then, thousands of toads appeared on streets in a nearby province.
Finally, just hours before China’s worst earthquake in three decades, animals at a local zoo began acting strangely.

10 things that made me happy recently.

1. Easter Sunday – which remind me that God loves me so much that He sent his only Son to die for my sins. And He is risen! Happy to be loved by God.

2. The realisation that although he might be grumpy sometimes due to weariness or stress, he still cares about how i feel and would apologise to see me smile again. Not many men have the guts to say sorry.
Happy to be loved by Gordon.

4. Happy for my current job, the least of 4 evils during this crazy peak season. Hallelujah!

5. I’ve never really dared to spend a huge chunk of money on mp3 players although for some time i really wanted a zen stone plus. But daddy recently dumped his “unwanted” zen vision on me! what a deal! Happy for a quite techsavvy & dealhunter daddy. He bought this at a steal, too!

6. Happy that i have finally (almost) recovered from my laryngitis and stomach flu! *phew*

7. Recently booked the tickets for Hongkong and USA in June 2008!
Happy to be able to fly abroad for a long break after peak period! :D

And supportive seniors too, whom i learn a whole lot from. Really, thank God!

9. Happy to have survived 7.5 months on the job… and more than half of peak period already!
Just 2 more months to go… ahhh kambatte ne and hopefully i dont burn out!

10. Happy to have finished these 10 points, so i can go and sleep now! haha.
Another long week at work… pray it’ll be smooth! :))

Cognizance

I was looking at the type of medicine i was prescribed to this morning, and im not gonna eat one of them cos of the harmful (and numerous!) side effects it can cause! Its quite scary actually, but i think i can probably do without it cos i was prescribed another med to control the inflammation.

  • Cephalexin (Antibiotic)
  • Prednisolone 5Mg (inflammation)
  • Serratiopeptidase 10Mg (inflammation)
  • Pharynx Lozenge (cough)
  • Dhasedyl Syrup (cough)

Cephalexin is my antibiotic, which my sis adviced not to eat unless im super ill.

…is a first-generation cephalosporin antibiotic. It is an orally-administered agent with a similar antimicrobial spectrum to the intravenous agents cefalotin and cefazolin.

Cephalexin is used to treat infections caused by bacteria, like upper respiratory infections (including sinusitis, otitis media, pharyngitis, tonsillitis and pneumonia, bronchitis), ear infections, skin infections, urinary tract infections and soft tissue infections.

Cephalexin side effects

Get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat. Call your doctor at once if you have any of these serious side effects:

  • diarrhea that is watery or bloody;
  • seizure (convulsions);
  • fever, sore throat, and headache with a severe blistering, peeling, and red skin rash;
  • pale or yellowed skin, dark colored urine, fever, confusion or weakness;
  • easy bruising or bleeding, unusual weakness;
  • confusion, agitation, hallucinations (seeing things that are not there); or
  • urinating less than usual or not at all.

Less serious side effects are more likely to occur, such as:

  • mild nausea, vomiting, diarrhea;
  • dizziness, tired feeling;
  • joint pain; or
  • vaginal itching or discharge.

Side effects other than those listed here may also occur.

***

Prednisolone sounds really bad…

It is a corticosteroid drug (a steroid hormone. i dont like steroids.) with predominantly glucocorticoid and low mineralocorticoid activity, making it useful for the treatment of a wide range of inflammatory and auto-immune conditions such as asthma, rheumatoid arthritis, Ulcerative Colitis and Crohn’s disease, multiple sclerosis, cluster headaches and Systemic Lupus Erythematosus. (do i need such a strong prescription?)

Possible side effects include fluid retention of the face (moon face, Cushing’s syndrome) (argh nooooooo!!!), acne, constipation, and mood swings (um.. i think my boyfriend doesnt deserve to bear this more than once a month…).

A lengthy course of prednisolone can cause bloody or black tarry stools; filling or rounding out of the face; muscle cramps or pain; muscle weakness; nausea; pain in back, hips, ribs, arms, shoulders, or legs; reddish-purple lines on arms, face, legs, trunk or groin (ie everywhere also will pain) ; thin and shiny skin; unusual bruising; urinating at night; rapid weight gain; (gaaa!!!) and wounds that will not heal. Swelling of the pancreas has also been reported.

Other effects include decreased or blurred vision, increased thirst, confusion, and nervousness (how to work like that?) . It also is reported to cause insomnia when large strengths, or large doses are taken.

Now that im done with the bad, im feeling drowsy… so..

Goodbye stormy world.

…and hello dreamland :))

Voiceless

Sigh.

For the past 2 days i haven been feeling too well, my throat hurts when i talk, swallow and yesterday i could barely speak a few lines before my voice trails out. Then I finally decided to see the doctor this morning when i woke up because it was too painful for me to continue self-medicating…

I waited for an hour to see the raffles medical doctor… -blah- goodness knows how much germs i inhaled in the clinic during that time.. but though the silly doctor chased me out after like 1minute of consultation (??!), i saw the doc’s diagnosis of Laryngitis and im convinced that it is the case when i went online to check up on it..

Laryngitis is an inflammation of the mucous membrane lining the larynx (voice box), which is located in the upper part of the respiratory tract. The most common symptom of either form is hoarseness that may, within several days, progress to partial or total loss of voice. Fever, sore throat, and swallowing difficulty may occur as well.

The major symptoms of laryngitis are:

  • Hoarseness
  • Sore throat
  • Weak or absent voice
  • Sensation of a lump in the throat or constant need to clear the throat
  • Dry cough
  • Fever

Some palliative measures that can be taken include:

  • Avoid public speaking during recovery
  • Be aware that whispering puts greater strain on the vocal cords than normal speaking
  • Inhale steam from a bowl of hot water or from a warm shower
  • Drink warm, soothing liquids (but do not drink alcoholic beverages)
  • Try a cool-mist humidifier; avoid air conditioning
  • Use nonprescription pain relievers and throat lozenges to ease the discomfort
  • Avoid cigarettes until the symptoms have subsided ( I will avoid 2nd hand smoke)

Hmm i shall check up on the medications next.

Then im going to concuss for the day.
